National Commander Charles E. Schmidt is encouraging local posts to make personal contact with their members as we finalize the last months of the membership year.
Our National Headquarters will be sending direct-mail renewal notices January, March and May. To maximize the number of members renewing, it’s important that personal contact comes at or about the same time your members receive their renewal reminders in the mail.
Failure to process dues payments promptly can create a number of problems with members who do not receive their membership cards quickly. Using a members dues payment to pay for other post obligations (robbing Peter to pay Paul) could cause serious legal problems for a post.
When we look at the guidance offered in the "2017 Post Adjutant's Guide" (page 19) on processing transmittals, we find this:
"On a regular basis (at least weekly), send to your department all completed membership cards for which dues have been received, including renewals, new and transferred members. Send the payment along with the cards to your department. If entire cards for deceased, unknown or duplicate members are being sent to the department at the same time, keep these separate from the renewals for which you are sending payment.
Write or stamp the date the dues were transmitted in the column headed “Date Transmitted” on your membership register. If entire cards for deceased, unknown or duplicate members are returned, note the date returned on your membership register as well."

Online Membership Renewal provides a number of important benefits to both the member who renews online and the post. Many Legionnaires are not aware they can pay their dues online and online bill payment is becoming more and more common.
Many consider Automatic Online Membership Renewal to be a “Best Practice” in the dues payment process. This is simply an online payment that is automatically processed each year during the monthy of July after the new Legion year begins. It eliminates the need to send dues renewal notices to members and eliminates the need for members to remember to pay their annual dues, the payment takes place automatically. We encourage local posts to make all their members aware of the benefits of Online Membership Renewal and believe it would be a good topic for your post newsletter, web site and other communications with your post members.
Online Membership Renewal takes about 30 days for the national office to send the local post their portion of the member’s dues. Most believe this is acceptable, in light of all the benefits Online Membership Renewal provides both the member and the post.

Almost since the founding of The American Legion in 1919, posts have recognized their outstanding members for exceptional service or accomplishment by awarding what are known as honorary life memberships. Various metal life membership cards and other items can be purchased from Emblem Sales. Your department may have rules pertaining to the granting of this type of membership. The post assumes the responsibility of paying dues annually for the remainder of the member’s life. Note: New and even longtime experienced officers sometimes overlook honorary life members at dues paying time, which may result in a membership lapse. To avoid this happening, it may be prudent for the post to purchase a Paid-Up-For-Life (PUFL) membership.
Honorary, associate, social or guest memberships in The American Legion are not legal. As provided in the Constitution and By-Laws, Article IV, Section 2, “There shall be no form or class of membership except an active membership.” This is not to be confused with honorary life membership, explained above.
Some local posts offer a free Early Bird Dinner as an incentive for members to pay their annual dues by a certain 'early' date. They pick a appropriate cut off date and stamp the membership cards for all the members who pay their dues by that date, with an Early Bird stamp which is available from the Legion Flag and Emblem sales. The membership card with the Early Bird stamp then becomes the member's ticket to the free Early Bird meal.
Other posts use an Early Bird Breakfast or Lunch as their incentive.
Regardless of whether you put on a dinner, breakfast or lunch, the meal should be seen by your membership as a worthwhile reward. Good food, good company and an enjoyable atmosphere makes the event special and one that members look forward to attending each year. Consider having your post commander, first vice-commander and membership chairman involved in the cooking and serving.
As with all post events, the Early Bird Dinner is a good time for members to get to know each other. Make sure every post members has a name badge. This is especially true for new members or ones that have not been seen at the post for some time. It may also be a good time for the Chairman of your post Welcome Committee to introduce all the new members to the group.
